Permaculture design introduced in Australia under the direction of Bill Mollison involves sustainably balanced design or permanent-culture. Beyond that, there really is no perfect definition of Permaculture.

'The problem IS the solution'
Permaculture design as I see it, are applied principles and technologies that solve problems and enhance the landscape, with every aspect having multiple functions that are sustainable yet with the human in mind.
For example, a
swimming pond
may be designed for human recreation/comfort and is educational. It can also be used for rainwater catch/storage, a fire break, for evaporative cooling, food harvesting, garden watering, and neighborhood/community gathering place, while maintaining the feel that it belongs in the landscape.
Often people don't think twice about driving great distances in search of swimming holes and other getaways, and this only when time allows. So creating your own sacred space at home seems to me to be a very reasonable proposition.
I also consider Permaculture-Ponds.com to be of good Permacultural design. It offers free valuable information, introduces new sustainable ideas, and makes a profit. This with the added benefit of being a powerful marketing tool for my local pond building business. see:

The idea is that anything added to the landscape, to the business concept, or any other aspect of human existence should work in harmony with its environment and provide multiple benefits.
Another interpretation:
"Consciously designed landscapes which mimic the patterns and relationships found in nature while yielding an abundance of food, fibre and energy for provision of local needs".
-David Holmgren
"What Permaculturalists are doing is the most important activity that any group is doing on the planet"
-David Suzuki
"We Can Do This, the Time is Now."
-Larry Santoyo
By working together, staying focused, and applying the principles of Permaculture we can begin; to simply, more efficiently, and more sustainably solve our many global ecological imbalances.
