Pond Biological Filtration Systems
Pond biological filtration systems or "bio" is the most natural and powerful way to maintain water quality within backyard ponds and waterfall.
While the skimmer is the most important 'pre filter' by removing debris as it enters the garden waterfall/pond, nothing can replace the polishing effect a good pond bio filtration system can provide. Using
bacteria cultures or Microbe Lift
will speed up the process and ad excellent diversity.
The aerobic
(pond-aeration)
bacteria cultures are the work horses here.
This bacteria will adhere to any available
surface within the backyard pond or garden waterfall.
Their job is to convert ammonia / ammonium from
broken down debris and convert it down to
usable food for pond plants, the last step in the
nutrient cycle.
Yes that is a recommendation to have
aquatic plants
in every water feature. Otherwise what happens, just like in an aquarium, nitrate begins to build up and give you all kinds of algae problems. Not to mention endangering the health of any fish or other aquatic life you might have. Bio filters, like external pressurized ones as well as 'filter falls' are specifically designed to create maximum surface area for these little allies.
There are other ways to gain the beneficial effects of pond biological filtration without spending much money. A built-in filter basin is an option.See:
diy pond filters
and
swimming pool conversions.
A well functioning system with the water being'prefiltered' through the skimmer and seeded periodically with pond bacteria culture,
should be virtually maintenance free.
ultraviolet clarifiers
can be addded for even greater
water quality.
This is why I prefer to line the basins with a good
pond liner (20yr. warr.)
insteadof concrete. Normally concrete will need patchingwell before a liner. If it doesn't need to be messed with, don't.
A healthy backyard pond/waterfall will always have some form of pond biological filtration system.
