When a pond ph adjuster is needed.
When a garden pond ph adjuster is needed:
ph Defined as: A measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution, numerically equal to 7 for neutral solutions, increasing with increasing alkalinity and decreasing with increasing acidity. The ph adjuster scale commonly in use ranges from 0 to 14.
Okay enough of that.Pond ph is important for
pond-water-tests
even though the exact definitions of pH is not.
What you need to know as a garden waterfall / water feature enthusiast is this: A slightly low ph(6.5 or so) will keep fish and aquatic life healthy while keeping algae at bay. Don’t freak out if it gets somewhat lower or higher simply begin to adjust it very slowly.
An abrupt change in pH is not good! This will throw off the buffering capacity of the water, which means it will be unable to maintain its pH at a certain level. It will fluctuate wildly during the day causing algae and other problems. Again, don’t be to concerned about defined specifics just the basics will keep your pond in good shape.
Standard test ‘strips’ are adequate to measure pH while other more expensive digital meters etc. are much more accurate but also a lot more expensive.
Over time your pond will tend to move toward a low pH on its own, so it is only important in the first year or two. This may not be true in a cement pond though. Concrete tends to leach lime and other minerals that will push the pH upwards or more alkaline. Make sure your cement pond is adequately sealed with a good penetrating ‘fish safe’ sealer, and be sure to reapply regularly. This alone makes a cement pond not so ideal because you never want to have to disturb a healthy pond or backyard waterfall. Lastly, pH buffer tabs are available that will hold your pH at a constant. These are great but remember that over time a ponds pH will tend to go down all by itself, so plan on abandoning the buffer tabs over time.
