UV Pond Light Sterilizers / Clarifiers

Garden ponds or backyard waterfalls installed with uv pond light sterilizers / clarifiers have become increasingly popular over the past few years. Price has followed suit making them systems a whole lot more affordable.

A UV pond light works when water passes over the UV bulb and kills everything it shines onto. This clears green floating algae and also eliminates any bacteria or potentially harmful pathogens. Keeping in mind that afterwards nutrients are still present, just changed in form.

Still holding onto the notion that a well designed backyard pond or garden waterfall shouldn’t normally need such intervention. Now I did say “normally”. All water gardens will go “green” from time to time and some more than others, so I wouldn’t totally discount UV sterilizers usefulness. What I would offer is that UV pond filters needn’t be on all of the time. Typically a UV sterilization system runs 24/7. Under those conditions the UV bulb will need to be replaced annually. A significant expense. What if you ran the system only when you needed it? In this case the life of the bulb and overall energy-use will decrease considerably. I do recommend UV sterilizers for backyard pond as an extra feature, depending on budget and other variables, but if talking about a swimming pool conversion where water quality is especially important, it might be a good idea.

There is some debate about using UV because it does kill beneficial zooplankton and bacterias that allow a natural system to work naturally. That's why I like UV as a backup. For instance, if ducks start to frequent, UV will kill 'swimmers itch' and other uninvited results of water fowl in short order. Ultimately, it's up to you to decide.
